Welcome to!A subreddit for all of those who love the Total War series. I can't help but think that the patches are nerfing the FUCK out of Macedon. I mean you start with a shit economy, hella factions disliking you, 2 regions that pretty much want you murdered, of which you hold the capitals. Every time CA releases a faction pack, that faction's starting units are buffed.

Rome 2 macedon units

Meet Macedon, in the middle of the Greek and Balkan faction packs. Literally every Greek or Balkan faction is supposed to sew its faction together from the corpse of Macedonia, like a goddamn bronze-age Frankenstein. Taking out Tylis is pretty easy, but from there, your forces are dwindled, you have cutthroat greeks, awful Illyrian pirates, and barbarian Falxmen jumping down your throat like you just took a shot of 'please kill me'. And everyone from Pergamon, to Cimmeria, to fucking Egypt declares war on you just 'cuz they're drinking the Hatorade. Anyone have a tip for starting as Macedon?.

TL;DR Thracia is a fucking trap.I'm a bit of the way through a Macedon campaign myself on Patch 14. I can easily say its the most challenging R2 campaign I've played, but it wasn't impossible. I'll tell you how I handled my opening moves, and maybe that will give you a few ideas on how to get some traction.I completely disregarded Thracia, the army there can hold a direct attack if micro is done correctly, and the region is hard to govern untill you have complete control of it. At Pella I replaced my general and then the next turn put him back into that Army, now with a Companion Cav unit instead of Royal Peltasts (You don't need to put your original general back in, but I like keeping my faction leader with the main army). I did this so my Hammer and anvil moves had as much shock cavalry as possible. While this happening, I'm spending the rest of my income on recruiting from Pella, I'm also moving my spy down to Larrisa. As soon as my General is back in the Army I consider it big enough to move out, the next turn I declare war against Epirus, and blitzkrieg Larrisa after poisoning the army there. Also I pick up any mercenaries for that fight and disband them straight away after the battle is done.

I did this because Epirus is the only Hellenic faction currently more hated than me by my neighbors, war with them is as much about currying up favor as it is taking territory. I then waited a couple of turns before moving on to Epirus' last city. I encounter their army on the way there. This is the one with that bloody Elephant unit, had my javelins out of position on that fight and lost a lot more men then I should have.

Once I reached their last settlement I got lucky and it only had a fleet there apart from the garrison, so I siege it for the capture. While this happens two things happen. Tylis sieges my city in Thracia, eventually taking it (love the smart choices the AI is making in patch 14). Fortunately they decide to consolidate there instead of pushing out. The other thing that happens is that I gift all my spare income to Sparta, to guarantee they stay onside, because at this stage, Athens likes me more for my war against Epirus. So once I defeat Epirus, the other Greek states no longer hate me enough to break their treaties and that front is secure. I now also have the income to mount a full offensive against Tylis.

Rome 2 Greek Units

I forgot to mention, I made trade agreements with both Rome and Syracuse while all this was going down.I will say this about my strategy though, my worries were only just beginning. I still wound up in a devastating war with Illyria that had me bankrupt, Paregon still decided they'd hate me, and Thracia was a trap and was still a thorn in my side for 50 turns. So I hardly did everything perfectly, but Macedon endured, we overcame our enemies, and we will not suffer any pretenders to Alexanders' legacy.Edit: Added a TL;DR. Sorry for the late reply, but I think Pneruda summed it up well. I reckon early game Macedon is supposed to be really hard. You have very few friends, and no one is culturally predisposed to like you. You need to get your foot in the door with the other Hellenic factions who largely all start out liking each other by not pissing off Sparta or Athens. As Pneruda also alluded to, when you go for Tylis you need to treat is as if you're going for all of Thracia.

Balkan raiders are gonna raid. My battle tactics generally never depend entirely on pikemen. I use them as the core unit for my front line, usually with about two or three holding my centre with Hoplites guarding the flanks. I also keep sword infantry in reserve, though I don't think Macedon gets any early game (I usually sub militia Hoplites for the same role until I get swords). My standard strategy tends to be using my cavalry and javelin skirmishes to pick off stragglers and draw the enemy towards my lines, where I lock them in in with my spears, mop up their skirmishes with my cavalry, and bring my infantry around my lines to complete the hammer and anvil.

The biggest problem with these tactics is if I don't close fast enough with my pikemen, enemy skirmishes will obliterate them. It's nothing revolutionary, but it gets the job done. A good mix of units is the biggest strength to any army. Hope this helped. I have the same problem tbh. It seems like as Macedon they have made it so the early game is almost impossible to get out of. I can understand that though because Macedon is such a fun and well balanced faction to play.

The only way I got out of the immediate early game losses was to focus all of my army on one faction then move to the next. For example I took care of Epirus to get some land and allied with Athens and Sparta. I then committed my army and navy fully to dealing with tylis. Although I did have trouble with funds I can't see a better tactic. Any other suggestions?. Make peace with Tylis on turn 1, pay if you have to. Recruit pike asap.

Each army should have atleast 6 pikes. Backstab Epirus, and take Larissa before Athens does. Then recruit more pikes, and beat Sparta/and Rome to Appollonia. That war should make Sparta and Athens, at the very least tolerable of you. Exploit this calm in Greece, and pacify Thracia.

Leave some pikes in Larissa, to ward off any attacks. If you get lucky, Sparta will declare war with Athens, join it.

Use your pikes to keep Athens alive, without weakening Sparta enough for Athens to finish them off. You want to prolong the war long enough for you to secure Thracia, and put your full force into the Greek war. After both wars should be over, consolidate Hellas, and you will be well established for the rest of the game. I decided to make this account just to respond to this post. I play on VH DeI with normal battle difficulty or Legendary vanilla with 4tpy.

Macedon is by far my favorite faction in Rome 2 due to the start, location and potential of the faction. Every time I play this start ALWAYS works for me. I will outline my military movements, manage your towns as you see fit.Turn 1First disband your navy, it's not cost effective and is just a money drain in the long term. Then move your starting armies to the border of Tylis and concentrate them into a single force.

Replace that force's general with your 14 year old general. Recruit 3 RANGED units with this army.

This will be your flagship army and general. He will start young and and be an absolute level 5+ badass by his 20s, especially if using DeI. Broker trade/na agreements GREEK factions, extort some money out of them in the process.

End turn.Turn 2If Athens or any other inferior Greek states have become uppity move your faction leader to your capital and recruit some simple troops to defend. If not use him to support your flagship force. Take Tylis with with your flagship force.

Units

DO NOT RECRUIT MERCENARIES. You will need to win a decisive or Heroic victory here.

Use hoplites and your general to crawl into town, use your missile superiority to slaughter the unarmored units. Hammer their units with cavalry charges from behind once they have FULLY engaged your melee troops.

Recruit as many units afterwards, money will be tight. The Odrysians may declare war on you but don't worry about it, you will be taking their town next turn.

End Turn.Turn 3Eliminate the Odrysians. Recruit mercenaries if you have to but do not maintain them.

Same strategy as before, there will be a hill overlooking the town to attack from this battle though. Win a decisive victory. After this battle chances are you will have a rebellion on your hands. Recruit more troops and disband your mercenaries if you hired any. Try to broker na treaties with the faction to your north, its not that important however, they are not very aggressive.

End turn.Turn 4Recruit troops/crush rebellion.Turn 5Recruit troops/crush rebellion.Turn 6Move towards the dirty barbarian scum north of your capital/recruit troops.Turn 7Crush the barbarian scum under the heel of the Gold and Black Sun. Win a decisive battle here, you will need to repel a full stack this same turn probably from the remnants of the faction. Congratulations, you own Thracia.Use your next few turns to stabilize income and public order, build up two full stacks of armies with good composition.

After this the Greeks should still be infighting or recovering from said infighting and will make easy pickings for you. I usually conquer Macedon and subjugate Athens/Sparta.

They make decent client states especially Sparta. You should own all of Greece, have a decent economy, and be fielding at least two stacks by turn 25. Congratulations, you have a level 5 badass general, a badass troop roster and the world is your oyster from this point on.Edit: Grammer.
